How to repack your items with comGateway

This is a hidden option, as they advertise it is available, but there is no easy and simple way to repack.

My items that I brought via comGateway never had the option to “repack”.


I only found out later when I received a tip directly from comGateway on how to save on shipping costs.


Just look at how many of my items that I brought from Amazon that was shipped with air cushions, which could have been squeezed better and fitted into a box.

How do I repack items with comGateway 

  • Use their multiple repack service – This is currently only available by email request only. 
 
I received these tips from them when I expressed my dissatisfaction at the shipping cost for my last purchase

We understand that you were not satisfied with the shipping cost. We would like to share that many of our customers find that significant savings can be achieved from buying multiple items from the same or different merchants. 

Multiple repacks are a new service we are rolling out for our users who plan to make multiple purchases from several different merchants, and is currently available by email request only. In a multiple repack, we will transfer the contents of multiple packages (of your choosing) to a box or bag of the lowest possible chargeable weight. 

Special requests (e.g., placing apparels inside a suitcase) are welcomed and will be fulfilled provided that this will not compromise the safety of your shipment. Shoe boxes and gift boxes may also be discarded to lessen the weight, if applicable. The multiple repack fee is calculated based on the number of packages. 

First 1 – 5 packages cost US$ 10.00 and for each subsequent package, there will be an additional US$ 1.00 each.  

To further thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback, we’ll be glad to waive the fee for your next multiple repack request.

Really comGateway? It would have been great to know this before I shipped the stuff over at the higher shipping cost (due to the bigger size not weight of the box – as it’s whichever is greater). An even better value add to know is that they could just throw away the shoebox as mentioned in their belated tip…

How to manage comGateway BuyForMe hidden charges

Let’s manage comGateway BuyForMe hidden charges

In my previous post, “How to buy items in the US without a US credit card“, I posted how to use comGateway’s BuyForMe service. I tested their BuyForMe service so I could see exactly how it works from personal experience, and I felt that it is a pretty good service.
Here is a summary of my findings:

  • Good for situations where your credit card is not accepted – I find it very useful in situations where you may be looking to buy a particular product or service and your local credit card is not accepted
  • There’s a 5% service charge – So while comGateway charges a 5% service charge for this service, it may be a charge I’d accept if I weren’t able to buy the item directly myself. So just make sure you work out the numbers right and see if it’s really worth it
  • Use the Time and Cost calculator to estimate your shipping costs
  • Be careful of the domestic shipping hidden fees which is not very visible at first – You’ll need to note down in the “Other instructions” box that you want them not to purchase unless they can give you details on any extra costs such as domestic shipping charges.
  • Repack your order – Only available if you request via email. Read more details about repacking your order with comGateway here.

Time and Cost Calculator from comGateway is great to estimate shipping costs

I originally felt that the process was transparent but there was one thing that managed to stump me, that is domestic shipping charges. This did not appear in the Time and Cost Calculator (see example above) and also not during the BuyForMe purchasing steps.
Seeing this gap, I sought out to reach out to the comGateway support team to understand where they may highlight this domestic shipping charge. As I felt that they should have made this charge even clearer before purchasing the item.
That and well, for a big organisation such as comGateway, you’d expect them to have an Amazon Prime account to help speed up purchases for their customers (so free or very low cost shipping). But unfortunately they don’t seem to, so please factor this in if you do want to use this service. That said though, this is not a charge that they are taking in for themselves, this is a charge that the US online store they are purchasing from is charging them (and in turn, us).

Advised to check for the domestic shipping charges from the US online stores

We sincerely apologize if the Domestic Shipping Fee of purchases through BuyForMe service is not reflected up front. However, we are glad to inform you that there are ways to know about the Domestic Shipping Fees of your purchases through our BuyForMe service, these are the following:

  • You can check the online store (AMAZON.COM, EBAY.COM etc.) first to know how much Domestic Shipping Fee they will charge.
  • When filling out a BuyForMe Form on our website, there is field that says “Other Instruction”. On that field, you can instruct us to notify you if there is a domestic fee, and what are available shipping options of the online store before placing the order.
